The Homeopathic Consultation
For a chronic case the first consultation usually takes about 1 hour. This includes a full physical examination and observation of the disease symptoms. The owner will be asked lots of questions regarding everything about the animal's life. When it was vaccinated, its character and personality, likes and dislikes and what makes the presenting symptoms worse or better. We also talk about diet and lifestyle, both of which can have a huge impact on health.
The more information the owner can bring to a consultation the more information I can use to assess the correct remedy for that case.
At the end of the consultation I would expect to have built up a good insight into the patient's problem. Usually, at this point, I am able to prescribe a Homeopathic remedy or remedies. However, with over 3000 remedies available I may have to take time to think about the case, or use a Repertory (a reference book, or nowadays more usually a Computer program) of remedies for particular symptoms, before I can commit to prescribing.
If I am treating a pet referred by another Veterinary practice, I will then write a report regarding my thoughts on the case, and any remedies prescribed.
Follow up consultations usually take less time, and would be at intervals varying according to the individual case.
